Create Your Own Luck: The Real Secret is Consistency

We’ve all been there. You see someone land a massive opportunity, close a huge deal, or achieve a life-changing breakthrough, and you can’t help but think, "Wow, they got lucky." It’s a common way to explain away the successes of others, especially when we feel like we’re grinding away without the same results. But is success really just a game of chance?

In our latest conversation on Beyond The Grind, we tackled this very question. Korede, Allen, and Tosin explored the provocative idea that maybe, just maybe, you can create your own luck. It’s not about waiting for a lightning bolt of fortune to strike; it’s about strategically and consistently putting yourself in its path.

The truth is, you can’t get lucky if you’re not even in the game. And staying in the game requires more than just hope—it requires work.

It’s Not Luck, It’s Positioning

One of the biggest shifts in perspective from the conversation is moving from the idea of "getting lucky" to "being prepared for opportunity." As Tosin puts it, the classic definition holds true: luck is when preparation meets opportunity. You can’t control when an opportunity will appear, but you absolutely can control your preparation.

This isn’t a passive act. It’s about intentional positioning. The guys discussed how two people can do the exact same thing and get wildly different results. The variable isn’t always talent, resources, or location. Sometimes, it’s about who was ready when the moment arrived.

Korede shared a perfect real-world example of his friend, a car salesman, who was struggling to hit his targets. Frustrated, he decided to try something new: he would be the very first person at the dealership every single morning. The first few days, nothing changed. But he kept at it, turning the action into a habit. Soon enough, his consistency paid off.

"all of a sudden there are like two customers just waiting for anybody to come to show up… he did… and now probably weekly… he’ll close at least two people because he was the first one there."

– Korede Fanilola

He didn't get lucky on one random day. He increased his chances of getting lucky by consistently showing up prepared. He was there and ready for the eager buyers who wanted to shop before starting their workday. That’s not luck; that’s brilliant positioning.

The Strategy Behind the Grind

Of course, consistency alone isn’t the entire formula. You can’t just do the wrong thing over and over again and expect a different result. As Allen pointed out, your preparation needs a strategy. It's a two-part process: you have to hone your craft and you have to get in the reps.

Think about it: you can’t just rehearse a sales pitch in the mirror and never try it on a real person. And you can’t just make a thousand sales calls with a terrible pitch. You have to practice, perform, get feedback, and refine. This is the active work of creating your own luck. It’s about building the skills, so when an opportunity does arise—whether in an elevator pitch or a random encounter—you are ready to seize it.

Sometimes, this process involves what feels like a setback. Korede shared another powerful story about securing a venue for an event. After the initial space fell through, he didn't give up. He kept working the problem, and in his search for a new location, he not only found a better spot but also connected with a celebrity chef and bartender who offered their services for free.

"You can't keep looking back and crying over spilt milk…you're gonna miss the opportunities in front of you and that goes to that you're missing the lucky opportunities because you're looking behind you."

— Allen Charles

What looked like bad luck was actually a detour to a much bigger win. But he only got there because he kept moving forward, demonstrating that faith without works is dead. He stayed in motion, and that motion led him to an unexpected blessing.

Your Turn to Get Lucky

Whether you call it luck, alignment, faith, or divine intervention, the underlying principle is the same. Opportunities will come, but they rarely reward those who are sitting still. They reward the prepared, the consistent, and the resilient.

So, what are you doing to position yourself for a breakthrough? It might be showing up to work 15 minutes earlier. It could be taking that online course to sharpen your skills. Or it might just be having the courage to keep going after a setback, trusting that your moment is coming.

Don't wait to get lucky. Put in the work, stay prepared, and go out there and create your own luck.
